2 ply yarn where one thread is white wool and the other thread is the grey Steingjerde (white and black wool carded together); so-called molined yarn. All our molined yarns are named after seabirds. The sheep graze on the islands where the bird’s nest and the bird guano contribute to the very rich pastures - which gives good wool.

The white wool is from Røst, the island furthest out in Lofoten. Here the sheep graze outside almost all year round, often on the islets around Røstlandet itself. The sheep eat a lot of seaweed and kelp, and the wind blows salt into the wool. These special conditions result in wool that’s white, soft and airy. It is customary to shear the sheep just once a year, during the spring. Some of the sheep are sheared with hand scissors out on the islets.

We get the black wool from the sheep that occasionally turn black and brown. Since there are not enough such black sheep here in Lofoten, so we rely on the wool sorting station, ‘Fatland Ull’ to source the best black wool from across the entire region for us.
Crossbred wool by Norsk Kvit Sau.

IMPORTANT: The yarn contains lanolin and becomes softer, lighter and airier after a gentle wool wash.  Always knit a sample, wash and dry it, then measure and calculate the number of stitches to establish the right pin size before starting larger projects.

This is ‘vintage’ yarn, and each year has its nuance. The clip from 2018 is now for sale.
