Rust is grey Steingjerde yarn plant dyed with madder. Grey Steingjerde yarn is white wool from Lofoten carded together with black sheep wool from around Northern Norway. Crossbred wool from Norwegian White sheep.

Here in Lofoten the sheep live outside most parts of the year. The sheep eat a lot of seaweed and kelp, and the wind blows salt into the wool. These special conditions result in beautifully white, soft wool.

We heat the wool in a hot dye bath containing pieces of madder root; a process done in our color kitchen on the farm. Natural variety and time in the pot define different shades of yellowy red. We make about 13 skeins per dye batch, and mark each skein with batch number. We always send colors from the same dyelot per order.

The darker the yarn, the more light-resistant it is and the less rubbing it withstands. This means that it can tolerate more sunlight, but there is a greater chance that some color will transfer to your hands when you knit with it. If this happens, you don't need to worry. It is not dangerous.

Our yarn is washed well after dyeing so that most of the excess color is gone, and it will not transfer color to other parts of the product or other garments. However, it is still good to be careful not to leave the product wet for too long, especially if it is knitted together with lighter colors. It is also recommended to wash your product separately from others.

Same thickness as 2-ply Sandgrunn, 4 Favner, 10 Favner, Brådjupt, Steingrunn, Geitrams, Røsslyng, Vinterhimmel, Rød lunde, Gress and Gul lunde.

You should knit a sample, wash and dry it and then measure/calculate the number of stitches/needle thickness before larger projects.

We sell both full 100g skeins and half 50g skeins.
